Extremely bold detail on the two portraits (this issue tends to be not very well struck, and is sometimes granular on the high points) (PCGS # 9224) .

Lot 1949
1946 Iowa Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-67. Lovely natural toning on both sides. What is most noticeable when one first examines this coin is its thick mint luster under the color -- it swirls from side-to-side unimpeded by noticeable abrasions and unscathed by even a hint of toning. A superb coin of singular beauty and importance to the field of numismatics (PCGS # 9316) .

Lot 1950
1915-S Panama-Pacific Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-66. Well struck and untoned. A worthwhile gem by any standard, the luster is not in the least timid or yielding, comprised as it is of wonderful satin to velvet-like qualities and brilliant throughout. There is no toning on either side. The strike, like the luster, is confident, first-rate, and indeed, as bold as ever seen on virtually any Pan-Pacific Half Dollar in any grade. The Half Dollar commemorating this event was the work of Charles E. Barber, a long-time mint's engraver whose father William Barber preceded him in the job in the 1870s. It features Liberty and a child on the obverse. Liberty holds two sprigs of flowers while behind, the sun sets between the southern and northern outcroppings that are the Golden Gate, entrance to San Francisco Bay. Barber included a wingspread eagle on the reverse. It perches on the union shield rather than the shield superimposed on its breast as was the method until then. In all, 27,314 half dollars were sold from an original authorized mintage of 60,000. The unsold pieces were remelted. Pop 238; 58 finer in 67 (PCGS # 9357) .
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,100.

Lot 1951
1915-S Panama-Pacific Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-66. Lovely rainbow toning around the edges. And a satiny gem whose texture is smooth from rim to rim with no defects to report. Sharply struck and lustrous, both sides possess eye appeal to spare. This is a decidedly well-struck Pan-Pacific commemorative no matter how it is looked at, with top-notch details. And the coin is superior to many which sometimes (though not always) come with a few weak areas. In closing, the pleasing fields go superbly with the sharp devices, which are free from signs of handling. Pop 238; 58 finer in 67 (PCGS # 9357) .
Estimated Value $1,900 - 2,000.

1935 Spanish Trail Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-67. Housed in an Old Green Holder. A sleek untoned coin. Bright silver color is preferred on these, and the present example is a superb representative without a hint of toning, all of which serves to light up the surfaces of this well struck and nicely preserved coin. Almost always on this issue the devices that were left by the dies are precision made to full die pressure, we find this to be the case here, everything is finely detailed, including the "head of a cow" (Cabeza de Vaca). Pop 91; 2 finer in 68 (PCGS # 9376) .
